4 Reasons why Western Peri/Menopausal Women have more symptoms than Women from Indigenous Cultures

1. Diet

The Standard Western Diet is based on animal products and ultra-processed foods which are low in protective factors like antioxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals that we need to help our bodies function well. Our diets are high in damaging factors that elevate our risk for diabetes, obesity and heart disease – saturated fats, trans fats, sugars and refined carbohydrates that make healthy function hard for the body.

2. Toxicity

We are bombarded daily with thousands of toxic chemicals – pesticides, cleaning products, food additives, air fresheners, exhaust fumes, cosmetics and prescribed medications. There is only so much our bodies can cope with.

3. Attitude

From 1966-2002, the prevailing medical view was that menopause was a disease requiring treatment. Shocking and misogynistic? Yes. True? Absolutely not. In traditional cultures, achieving menopause is celebrated: free from childbearing and rearing, women become respected elders.

4. Movement

We’re sedentary. Our bodies need to move to work well.

It is possible to feel good without HRT. Naturopathic medicine offers a variety of well-evidenced health-promoting strategies to support your body as it transitions to the next phase of your vital, healthy life.
